Redness : Redness and irritation of the foreskin in a small child can be caused by a number of things: -infection (from bacteria, fungus or virus from poor hygiene) -irritation from environmental substances (such as creams) -trauma (diaper rubbing) -ammoniacal dermatitis (irritation caused by the ammonia in urine in diaper wearing boys) each of these has a different treatment, so it is important to call your child's doctor and have him seen. Balanitis is swelling, redness and irritation of the glans penis (the head of the penis) and occasionally involves the foreskin. This is most common in uncircumcized boys and is typically caused by poor hygiene leading to infection.
