Canker : Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are a common problem and are very uncomfortable. They can be caused by stress, weight loss, lack of sleep, or immune system problems. They are more common when patients have braces on. To prevent them, do not use a mouthwash with alcohol in it. Use a mild toothpaste. Be sure you are eating a healthy diet. There are some studies that show a zinc supplement can help. If you continue getting them, and especially if they look infected (bright red, increased pain), or if you have diarrhea (this can be a sign of crohn's disease with aphthous ulcers) then you must be seen medically.
