Herpes: This is probably herpes cold sores. Please see your dermatologist to make sure.

How long: Has it been there? Sounds like an ulcer from what you discribed. It should go away on its own in 2 weeks. If it is a herpetic lesion you can see your dentist for treatment options. There is a difference between the two from a contagious stand point. Dental lasers are a great option and could be used in both cases.
