When : When the eyelids are closed, you have very little risk of uv damage from the sun. While open, I do recommend sun glasses with uv protection.

It can.: It is best to protect you eyes from the sun. Increased sun exposure is associated with cataracts, skin cancer and more wrinkles. With the eyelids closed, the lids can become sunburned. Sun glasses or eyecups can help, but limiting excess solar radiation will serve you better in the long term.
