It is also recommended that you go on several short walks each day. The purpose of leg elevation is to prevent swelling and improve venous drainage while your legs are healing. This combined with tight bandages keeps veins and their tracts empty and allows them to scar down. Once the bandages have been removed you should continue with compression stockings for several weeks. The importance of walking is to keep your exercise level, improve your lung function, and prevent blood clots from forming.

For comfort: It depends to some degree on what kind of procedure you had done. For the most part, though, the real purpose of leg elevation is to increase comfort. If your legs are feeling good, then elevation isn't necessary. Often, being up and walking actually makes your legs feel better than if you are lying down with your leg elevated.
