Oxygenated vs : Un-oxygenated red cells. Red blood cells impart a bright red color when carrying oxygen; when these cells lose oxygen and pick up carbon dioxide, blood turns dark in color. There are other causes of different colors, e.g. Carbon monoxide poisoning, methemoglobinemia and variant hemoglobins.
