Ophthalmology: Comprehensive means complete- so comprehensive ophthalmology means "complete" ophthalmology - like a comprehensive ophthalmology exam means a complete eye exam.

Great eye docs!: Ophthalmologists are physicians who specialize in the management of eye problems. Some ophthalmologists subspecialize and focus on certain eye problems. For example, there are glaucoma specialists who treat only glaucoma. Comprehensive ophthalmologists are the ones who do not subspecialize. An analogy is an internist compared to a cardiologist.

Comprehensive: A comprehensive ophthalmologist handle all sorts of eye disease, medical and surgical. Think of these as the general practitioner of the eye. General medical physicians sometimes refer their patients for subspecialty care, and this is also true for the general ophthalmologist. They may refer for glaucoma, retinal, neurophthalmologic, etc consults.
