In ancient times, how did doctors repair bones?

Good question!: Before x-rays, only visible deformities could be realigned to what looked "normal" and held in place with a splint, like a stick. Broken bones that were not visibly deformed were simply perceived as pain, and gradually healed. Open fractures were often fatal because of infection. Residual deformities resulted when misaligned bones healed in their incorrect position, unless rebroken.
