Is it necessary for you to have a blood transfusion when having a total knee replacement?

No: Generally transfusions are not necessary, although occasionally they are needed. Knee replacements are typically done under tourniquet to reduce blood loss. After the surgery is completed, blood loss may still occur. If the hemoglobin drops to 8 or less or if the patient is symptomatic with rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, of light headedness when upright, transfusion shoud be considered.

No: Only ten to twenty percent of patients require a blood transfusion after total knee replacement.

Not always: Based on your blood loss during the surgery and the amount you bleed after your surgery, you may require a transfusion. Most surgeons do not transfuse healthy patients until their hemoglobin levels get below 8. If so, and you are symptomatic with a high heart rate, low blood pressure, dizziness, or lightheadedness then your surgeon will recommend a transfusion.
