Dentist directions: Usually after an extraction, your dentist or surgeon will prescribe some pain medication. Follow their instructions including which pain medication and what to do after the extraction.

Some suggestions: Take otc pain medication such as advil, motrin, aleve (naproxen) or what you normally take for a headache; limit physical activity; keep your head elevated; ice packs on and off for the first 24 hours only; involve yourself in a mental activity that you like, such as reading a book, watching sports, etc.
