It happens: Women occasionally don't release an egg at the normal time. This leads to a cycle that continues to build under estrogen stimulation. This builds extra material in the womb that will eventually break down, often at an unexpected time, as an extra heavy period. There are other possibilities, but if this is a one time event I wouldn't worry about it.
