Dementia: Your description makes me concerned that more than dementia may be going on. Unless severely affected for a long time, demented people generally respond in some way at least. He needs to see his physician, and medications need review. It is possible for demented people to be acutely sick with stroke, infection, intoxication, heart problems, etc -- which could make it hard to "come out of it.".

Possibly: It depends on how severe that person's dementia is. It sounds like you are describing someone who has had dementia for a while. The important thing is to enjoy the moments of clarity &/or enjoyment you have together.
