Inherent risk: Surgery inherently has risk. The risk/benefit analysis where you compare your risk without surgery to the risk of your procedure/surgeon combination is how you decide if you want to consent. Ok to ask your doc/surgeon. Typically hiatal hernia surgery is low risk and worth it.

Fundoplication : Hiatal hernia surgery is relatively common and also very safe; however, no operation is risk-free. Therefore, the decision to have surgery requires balancing the benefits w/the risks--this is a conversation that you need to have w/a surgeon. Risks include injury to the spleen, stomach, esophagus & a collapsed lung. This would be considered an advanced operation; experience is a must.

No: Hiatal hernia repair is typically a safe and effective operation when performed by an experienced surgeon. It can almost always be completed laparoscopically which will speed your recovery as well.
