As a newborn baby: Sickle cell screening is done on all newborns here as part of california's newborn screening program. Other states probably do the same or similar screening for their newborns.

At birth: Screening for sickle cell disease is required by law now in all 50 states and the district of columbia. Therefore, all children born in the us get a sickle cell screen within 3-5 days of life.
