Means no Hgb S: This test is specifically looking for HGB s. It will detect sickle trait (hgb as) or sickle cell disease (hgb ss). If the test is negative it means there is no sickle hemoglobin present, but it does not mean aa. There are many abnormal hemoglobins that are not aa, but would also test negative on a sickle screen.

Maybe: Unless you have been recently transfused with large quantities of blood, the negative sickle prep test indicates that you do not have sickle cell trait. It does not confirm that you are genetically HGB aa. Other possibilities not identified by sickle prep test are HGB c and several other qualitatively different hemoglobins. The. Sickle prep does not address the possibility of thalassemia traits.
