What could be causing sharp pain in the center rib cage when breathing in deeply?

Lots of things: Most chest pain of the sort you describe comes either from the chest wall (ribs, sternum) or the lining of the lungs (the pleura). The lungs have no pain sensory nerves, and therefore (in spite of how often we hear of it) its never accurate to state that your "lungs hurt". Sore muscles can also cause these symptoms.
