4% hydroquinone: The only creams that don't "cover up" the dark circles (cosmetics, which are fine, but do not really lighten, only improve the appearance) are prescription hydroquinones, usually prescribed in 4% concentrations. There are other skin options such as kojic acid and azelaic acids used for acne treatment that may be prescribed if indicated. Meds that include Retin-A and steroid may also be helpful.
