Bellybutton open ...: Into the bowel. In early fetal life, there is a connection between the umbilicus and the distal ileum. It is supposed to obliterate before a baby is born. Occasionally, the connection persists, called a patent omphalomesentric duct. It is diagnosed by seeing stool or bubbles issuing from the umbilicus. It is repaired surgically.

Umbilical anomaly: A patent omphalomesenteric duct remnant is a fetal anomaly involving the umbilicus. It is an abnormal communication between the umbilicus with the intestines. One may notice drainage of intestinal contents from the umbilicus. A sinus gram may demonstrate a connection with the intestine. Surgery is required to correct and prevent complications once diagnosed.
