How many times should a woman have a mammogram annually?

Once A Year: Screening mammograms are performed annually. If a borderline abnormality is found (birads 3), a 6-month follow-up study is ordered but this isn't a screen.. Controversy exists whether to start screening at age 50 or 40; in the us, most doctors recommend yearly mammograms at 40. It is also controversial whether to get mammograms after age 75;; this is more dependent on a woman's physiologic age.

Age 40: According to the American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology, and most others, annual screening mammography should begin at age 40. Screening may begin sooner if you are a BRCA carrier or are otherwise at high risk.
