Supportive care: Tonsillitis is (by definition), inflammation of the tonsils. This is most often due to viral infections and the only medically concerning bacterial illness that is routinely treated is group a beta-hemolytic strep or "strep throat". There are other possible much less common bacterial diseases that can occur but with vaccination most of these are rarely seen. Tx with rest, gargling, pain meds.
