Basics: Bell palsy is an injury to the 7th cranial nerve which exits the skull just behind the ear. This nerve controls movement of the face, taste, and controls a few other special actions. It can be injured in a number of ways (most commonly after a viral illness) which results in a lack of movement on one side of the face. In most cases the palsy will fully resolve over weeks to months.
