Ice and elevation: Toe pain especially 1st toe pain can come from a variety of factors such as gout. If the toe is red hot and swollen then you will need to consult your local podiatrist. Also, if any trauma happen to the toe with swelling, ice and elevation are great techniques to reduce swelling and pain.

RICE....: Rest, ice, compression and elevation. You can try buddy -taping the toe and use an otc anti-inflammatory like aleve (naproxen). Then, get to a doctor for diagnosis and treatment of the full extent of the injury!

Finding the : Correct diagnosis of what is wrong is the first step. You need to differentiate between a fracture, infection and say gout for example as the treatments are all different. See a podiatrist.

Depends on cause: Some causes of toe swelling can include localized issues such as arthritis, infection, ingrown toe nails, trauma (fracture, sprain, and tendonitis, tight shoes) gout, and side effects to medication. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.
