Pain: Pain, swelling behind the ankle and much reduced or inability to flex the ankle toward the sole of the foot. Sometimes one is able to feel a gap in the tendon where it is torn.

Sudden snap and pain: Patient's will usually experience a sudden snap, loss of function, pain in the back of the ankle. There is usually inability to propel off the foot. Sometimes one can feel a space in the tendon.
