Takes time: It depends on whether the tooth was erupted or impacted. It also depends on the size of the tooth and the patients age and healing ability. In any case, it takes time (weeks to months) for the surface of the socket to close up. Since soft tissue heals more quickly then bone it may appear healed on the surface but bony healing continues for quite some time.
