Only in an emergency: Everyone gets depressed from time to time. This is not the same thing as having a depressive disorder, which is a treatable condition. On occasion a person will have thoughts about suicide that are frightening. If such thoughts lead to a serious concern about the possibility of suicide, calling 911 or going to the er might be a good idea. Otherwise, discuss with your doctor asap.

Agree w Dr. Smith: Times for more urgent treatment of depression include if there are safety concerns for yourself or others, if depression is so severe that one has lost touch with reality or if severe depression prevents one from being able to handle basic life functions such as eating or bathing.
