Several: The fluid, or initial bloody fluid, or pus settles to the bottom of the pleural space( between the lung and the chest wall) it clots or gets thick and sticks in the dependent area and the lung sticks around it. If there is a lot of bloody or fibrinous fluid it may get stuck in several places- collections called loculations.
