Specializes in Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgeon: The majority of sports medicine physicians are orthopedic surgeons. Other specialties that also work in sports medicine (but do not perform surgery) come from backgrounds in family practice, physiatry, and internal medicine. A few rare physicians also come from emergency medicine, pediatrics, and ob/gyn.

Specializes in Orthopedic Surgery

Team physician: Lots of different docs can subspecialize in sports medicine... While orthopaedics is common, pediatrics, family practice, internal medicine, physical medicine and rehab, and er all can do fellowships in sports medicine. If you are looking for a good one...Make sure they are fellowship trained. If you really want to make sure they are good with athletes...Check to see if they are a team physician.

Different types: There are different types of sports medicine physicians, so there is not necessarily one alternative name. Some are sports physiatrists, some are sports orthopaedic surgeons, and others are primary care sports physicians. Typically, sports medicine physicians completed a year of extra training in sports medicine on top of their 3-5 yrs of residency and 4 yrs of medical school.
