Wish we knew: Keratoconus is a condition of the cornea (the window at the front of the eye) in which the protein molecules lose some of their adhesive strength and the cornea bulges out which in some cases impairs vision. We do not know the cause. It does spontaneously get a little better but more likely progresses. See your corneal specialist for the best management.

Eye rubbing: Keratoconus is often related to severe eye rubbing - so stopping eye rubbing is a first step. There is a procedure called corneal collagen crosslinking that is effective at stopping the progression of keratoconus.
