Is it possible for common antacids to neutralize the acid that plaque produces and causes cavities?

Yes: Current studies in cariology show that anything that increases ph over 7 will reduce or eliminate the decay process. However, using common antacids regularly for this purpose may be a problem for digestive health.

Yes: But since the bacteria produce acid throughout the day and night, using antacids is not practical. You would be better off brushing and flossing well, eating healthy, and having regular dental checkups. Chewing sugar-free gum also helps with salivary flow and to remove food and bacteria from your teeth.

No: Antacids are used for GI upset and only pass the mouth briefly. Plaque acids need to be brushed off and cavities can be reduced by the use of Fluoride which stays in contact with the teeth after brushing or use of Fluoride containing mouth wash.
