Usually 1 to 2 days: A root canal involves removing the nerve from the tooth which alleviates some and sometimes all pain. However if an infection was present, the pain may not completely subside untill infection is gone.

RCT: Most of my patients have little or no pain following root canal therapy. When they do, it is usually just for a few hours that day and easily remedied with mild to moderate pain medication, usually just advil, Motrin or aleve (naproxen). On rare occasion it may last for a couple of days and is usually associated with an infection and resolves as the antibiotic coverage begins to work.
