Relax!: Canker sores, unlike fever blisters, are more triggered by stress than anything else. That can be systemic stress (new job, spouse, child, major life changes, etc) or localized stress (braces rubbing the lip, acidic foods, etc.) try to eliminate/reduce sources of stress (please don't eliminate your spouse/child!) and watch what you eat. Acidic foods among other things can trigger an outbreak.

Avoid triggering it: Citrus foods, sharp edges from doritos, toothbrush, can all trigger the virus that causes ulcerations in your mouth known as canker sores. Oh and dont stress. Stress can trigger it too. Easy to say harder to do. When you first notice them, your dentist can give you medication in the form of a patch or gel to speed up the process so you are not in pain.
