Dr. Kim Fagan answered

Swelling in a tendon: Trigger finger is a result of a nodule or focal thickening of the flexor tendon getting caught in one of the fascial tunnels that it passes through when bending the involved finger. The most typical place to feel the catching is in the palm of the hand. Early a well placed cortisone injection with or without a short period of splinting may help. If triggering persists there is a simple surgery.

Variable: Trigger finger is thought to be associated with "overuse syndromes." however, it is difficult to determine what constitutes overuse of the hands! everyone uses their hands for everything. It is also seen in association with diseases like diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can generally be quite effective at treating trigger fingers.
