Both.: The veins you can see under the surface of the skin are the superficial veins. They have little one way flap valves in them to keep the blood moving towards the heart. If these valves weaken, blood pools and expands the vein, so you get varicose veins. Most of the blood is actively transported back to the heart by the deep veins in the calf, compressed by the strong calf muscles when you walk.

DVT: If its a superficial clot you will be ok. Deep venous thrombosis need therapy to avoid complications. Blood thinners. Need to prevent clot from growing, breaking, recurring and long lasting complications like pain and swelling. Your doctor should be able to tell if if its superficial or deep.

Back to the heart: Almost all veins supply blood back to the heart. The calf has deeper veins that also flow back to the heart.
