Yes it can: Any oral infection can become worse and affect larger areas and eventually spread beyond the mouth. If these infections spread they can go towards the brain or into the chest, each of these areas are incredibly important to health and survival. Although infections of this severity are not common they are not rare and their importance should not be ignored.

Yes it is possible: Tooth infection can spread several ways. One way that is serious is for it to spread down your neck ( called ludwig angina) this can make it very difficult to breath. Infections can also spread into the sinus. Once the infection spreads to the soft tissue (cellulitis) there are many serious thing that can happen. You should always take care of these infections as soon as possible.

Yes: Recently in maryland a 12year old boy died from an infected tooth because his mother didn't have the money to seek treatment. The dental association initiated a program the would allow easy access to care and hopefully prevent this from ever happening again.

High Risk: A good thing to remember is that upper teeth are located less than two inches from your brain. Lower teeth are two inches from your airway. It is very important that any dental infection be addressed immediately. Infections of the head and neck should be taken very seriously and treated by a dental professional as soon as possible.
