No real difference: Unless the pt has poor blood clotting for some reason, see no contra-indication or unusual risk.. Lp usually is quite safe, but could introduce systemic infectioin into the spinal fluid space, could cause bleeding if venous plexus penetrated, post-lp headache most common side effect.

Needed for diagnosis: Malaria can affect the central nervous system, causing brain dysfunction for a variety of reasons. Getting spinal fluid by lumbar puncture is sometimes required to make the diagnosis, or to tule out other causes of dysfunction or meningitis. Spinal taps are generally safe under appropriate conditions.
