Lp usually is quite safe, but could introduce systemic infectioin into the spinal fluid space, could cause bleeding if venous plexus penetrated, post-lp headache most common side effect.

Getting spinal fluid by lumbar puncture is sometimes required to make the diagnosis, or to tule out other causes of dysfunction or meningitis. Spinal taps are generally safe under appropriate conditions.
