Improve function: Rehabilitation can help spinal cord injured patients with maximizing their function. Inpatient rehabilitation can educate the patient on bowel and bladder management and functional transfers. The rehabiliation team can also assist families with ongoing care, education, home modification and transfer training.

Crucial: Rehabilitation is crucial following spinal cord injury. Depending on the level of injury and residual function there are many things that need to be learned to deal with the effects of the injury. This ranges from learning to use a wheelchair, transferring from different surfaces, dealing with bowel and bladder issues and also treating pain and spasticity. Family education is also needed.
