PERTUSSIS?: Does your son have the pertussis shot ? If not , pertussis is having a series of coughing episodes ending with a " whoop" associated with fever.

Unlikely: Patients with pertussis (whooping cough) are generally afebrile. Typical cough spell is a repetitive coughs until child actually stops breathing briefly, followed by sudden deep inspiration (whoop).
