What are the week of sugar pills in birth control. does that mean i'm not protected? and if i don't take them for the week of my period is that okay?

You are protected: The sugar pills are only there as a reminder and to keep you in a routine. Actually taking them is optional, but resume your pills on schedule even if you are still having your period. With most pills you are actually taking medication only 3 weeks and then being off for a week brings down a period.
