Dressings: Primary is what is on the wound directly; secondary is what is on top of the primary dressing.

Top and bottom: A primary dressing is that applied directly to the wound expected to have the most direct effect on the wound . A secondary dressing is applied over thirst either to hold it in place/protect it or provide an enhancing effect such as absorbing extra drainage.
