Stress: This is an unconscious response to stress. In stressful situations, people will clench their teeth. The signals for this comes from your brain. Such clenching is usually harmless, unless you continue it over a long time. In such situations, you may place undue stress on your jaw joints, leading to TMJ syndrome. If you start getting symptoms, see you dentist who will recommend treatment.
