Yawning: Probably because you are bored and do not find it exciting. Try reading a book , watching a movie or listening to music while you work out.

A 33-year-old member asked:

What can make it difficult to take deep breathes and make me have to work to yawn?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Gregg Albers
Addiction Medicine 41 years experience
Hard to yawn: Any process that makes the chest wall stiff or make it hard to move air in and out of the chest. Pulmonary fibrosis restricts motion, emphsema, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive lung disease, sarcoidosis, previous lung surgery, can make it hard to take a deep breath. One of the most common is the restricted breathing of obesity, as well as lack of exercise. Smoking makes all of these worse.

Cause of cramps when I yawn?

Dr. Pavel Conovalciuc
Family Medicine 23 years experience
Where are the cramps: I would like to know where you are cramping while yawning. If you do so in your jaw, it may be that you have some problems with temporomandibular joint (known as tmj). You may have inflammation there or it may be pushed out of place if you are yawning way too widely. I'd appreciate more detail, so i could help you better.

Severe yawning after reading for twenty minutes?

Dr. Jack Mutnick

???: Define severe? If yawning while reading makes you tired, then you are one of the blessed few who know the best way to get to sleep at night. If it is a problem, then it is just because what you are reading is excessively boring.

A 24-year-old female asked:

How come when you yawn and are listening to music it becomes louder?

Your ears pop: When you yawn, you also pop your ears. This may make sounds a little louder just from the equalized pressure in your ears.
A 30-year-old member asked:

Why do people make others yawn when they yawn?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Donald Haupt
Psychiatry 49 years experience
No definite answer: Contagious yawning has been known since at least the 16th century, but there has yet to be an explanation that stood up under testing. The best was that people have a grouping of "mirror neurons" in their brains that do imitative behaviors, but recent studies show that these neurons aren't activated during contagious yawning. It remains somewhat of a mystery.
