Definitely, after 40: People lose focusing ability all through their lives, and usually this becomes noticeable in the mid-40's, when low powered reading glasses may be needed. The distance vision may still be 20/20, but due to reduced focusing ability of the lens in the eye, reading glasses are needed. This worsens until the early 50's. There is no surgical way to restore the focusing ability of the eye.
