How soon can you resume normal physical activities after having retinal detachment surgery?

Depends: Depends on how extensive the detachment was and what kind of procedure was done, especially if gas or silicone oil was used and you have to position a certain way (such as face down). Ask your retina specialist.

It Depends: Retinal detachment surgery can involve a range of surgical techniques from an office procedure to operative surgery. Typical recovery ranges from 2 to 6 weeks depending on whether gas or oil was used in the surgery. It may take months for the vision to recovery optimally, depending on the type of detachment that occurred. It is best to follow the surgeon's guidelines.

Varies: Varies by surgeon and type of surgical repair. In my practice, patients can begin returning to normal activities by 2 weeks to 2 months. The longer restriction is usually related to the gas bubble in the eye, as, depending on the type of bubble, it can hang around for up to 2 months. Most of my patients begin easing into normal activity at 2 weeks, though.
