A member asked:

I was just diagnosed with arthritis of the great toe joint. why only one?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

This joint gets used: The great toe joint gets a lot of forces through it. When we talk about the heel-toe gait, the forces with each step are transferred sequentially in the foot. Toe off refers to us walking off our big toe. This is why the big toe (hallux) is biggest. Injuries, time takes it toll on the joint.
