Yes and increasing: The increased availability of advanced imaging techniques are useful in accurately locating impacted teeth, diagnosing pathology, locating vital structures for implant placement and tooth removal, to diagnose fractures and facial malformations and in general allow the dentist to accurately see that which is unseen.

Cone Beam X-ray : Cat-scan & MRI have use in dentistry in helping to diagnoses TMJ issues, but cone-beam radiography has completely taken over. It gives us 3-d images like no radiographic technique before. I believe it will, ultimately, do away with all other forms of radiography, other than simple dental x-rays, like bite wings and emergency periapical x-rays.

Patholgy/diagnosis: Cat scans and MRI are used to treat tmd disorders, in implant placement, pathology location, pathology treatment (such as a vertical root fracture), and for orthodontic treatment. This is amazing technology but it does have a negative. Radiation exposure for cat scans. We use cbct technology which has far less radiation and almost the same diagnostic quality.

Absolutely: In our dental implant center, we use ct scans on a regular basis. It allows us to better evaluate the bone contours and plan the placement of implants more precisely. Endodontists (root canal) use it to evaluate the bone surrounding problematic root canal treated teeth. Also used to evaluate bone for extraction. Other uses as well, including tumor detection.

Variable: Depends on: 1. The kind of anesthesia used -- can be from minutes to several hours, 2. The type of injection - local or block 3. Your body's ability to metabolize it. Usually if you take a lot of medications, you will metabolize faster and be numb a shorter time. The converse is also true.
