A member asked:

Extremely dry and winter is bad. what is the exact medical risk of broken skin?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Risk of infection.: Broken or damaged skin means the natural barrier against infection is lost. When this is a small area or cut, it can still become infected, but if large (such as burn or major injury) there is a proportionately larger risk of infection entering the body (not to mention fluid and electrolyte loss with those large-area burn injuries). For winter hands/face, use moisturizer and lip balm w/ sunscreen.
