Maybe: Floaters are often seen prior to detachment of the retina. Many patients who are having a retinal tear or traction will see floaters. Roughly, 15% of new floaters are associated with tears. Tears can lead to a detachment unless they are treated with laser. Since there is no way to confirm for sure that there is no tear, it is recommended to get a dilated eye exam when new floaters appear.
