Not uncommon: Is is common for a young woman to have irregular periods for the first 6 months or so after starting to have them. It can also depend on her weight and body fat, and her level of physical activity. If she does not have another period in another month, i suggest seeing her pcp.

Early cycle patterns: Regular menses is dependent on ovulation to reset the clock. During the first year only most girls do not ovulate regularly (>60%) and that can lead to irregular hormonal patterns & menses. By the 2nd year most will ovulate every month & get into a more predictable pattern. The pattern you describe is not unusual.
