Ibuprofen and adjust: The retainer should hold the position of teeth. If its causing pain, it needs adjusting to remove excessive pressure areas. In the meantime, Ibuprofen (advil) can give your best results. It knocks down pain and reduces inflammation.

Have it checked: It is not unusual to feel pressure from a new or adjusted retainer , but intense pain should be checked out by your dentist or orthodontist.

Shouldn't hurt: Retainers are supposed to gently prevent teeth from moving. They may be a little sore at first, like when you had a wire changed, and if so advil (ibuprofen). If you don't wear them as directed, and teeth shift, shoving them back in will hurt and might cause damage. They should not be causing intense pain or be rubbing your gums. If so, call your orthodontist immediately for an adjustment.

Should not hurt: Retainers should fit passively and they may be just a little snug, but no real pain. Have you been wearing your retainers as directed? If not, your teeth may have moved, and now the retainers do not fit correctly... That would cause intense pain, since the retainers are trying to move the teeth (with probably too much force). See your orthodontist about it.
