In short, no: We generally dont do surgery for people with 100% blockage; endartectomy can be hazardous in this situation. A person with stroke symptoms and 100% blockage is typically treated with Coumadin (warfarin) anticoagulation. An occluded artery may stay occluded or may partially reopen over time. Whether it reopens or not, it rarely causes further problems but it's important to follow the other side by ultrasound.

Not really: May develop some collateral vessels to help. Most likely he has an intact circle of willis and is getting flow from other side. Treatment will depend on what your husband and surgeon decide best meets his needs.

No: Keep eye on other side with yearly ultrasounds. Scan earlier if symptomatic.
